FEATURED ARTISTS:

Hernando R. Ocampo

H.R. Ocampo (1911-1978) was one of the leading figures in modern Philippine art.   He was a nationalist who depicted the cruel realities of life in the Philippines during the war years, while also portraying her natural beauties.  Fernando Amorsolo’s influence showed in his earlier paintings, but Ocampo developed a complex and abstract style of his own.  Some of the works he produced in later years were inspired by science-fiction.

Though known today mainly as a painter, Ocampo had also worked as a successful writer, editor and playwright.   He was accorded the status of National Artist in Visual Arts 1991.

The paintings and studies in this collection date from the closing phase of the artist’s career.

Carlos Francisco

The Poet of Angono, Carlos “Botong” Francisco was only the second Filipino to be recognized as National Artist in Painting (after Fernando Amorsolo).  He was one of the leaders of the modernist movement and the father of mural painting in the country.

Francisco was quite fond of historical subjects, often designing outfits for “costume” pictures such as Romeo and Juliet, Ibong Adarna, the Juan Tamad series and Genghis Khan (of which he was also the scriptwriter).

Francisco’s best-known works include Fiesta, Stations of the Cross, The Invasion of Limaong and Bayanihan.
